Acupuncture needles placed on the abdomen for fertility treatment

Fertility acupuncture: optimising your success.

Supporting your fertility journey with acupuncture and IVF support, at our Highgate Hill clinic.

Whether you are preparing for pregnancy, undergoing IVF, or wanting to improve your cycles, fertility acupuncture offers a safe, natural way to support your reproductive health, on its own or alongside medical fertility treatment.

How acupuncture supports fertility

  • Improves blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, supporting a healthy environment for conception
  • Helps regulate menstrual cycles and hormone balance over time
  • Reduces stress and anxiety, which can otherwise interfere with your cycle
  • Supports egg quality and a healthy, receptive lining of your uterus

IVF and assisted reproductive support

Many people choose acupuncture alongside IVF, IUI or egg freezing. We work alongside your fertility specialist, not instead of them, so your acupuncture care is timed to fit safely around your medical treatment plan, not against it.

Needle placement changes depending on where you are in your cycle or your IVF timeline. In the first half of your cycle, before ovulation, treatment focuses on building healthy blood flow and a strong lining. After ovulation, or after an embryo transfer, a small number of points are deliberately avoided, and treatment shifts to gently supporting that second half instead. This isn't random, it's a considered part of doing fertility acupuncture safely and properly.

  1. Before an IVF cycle

Preparing the body in the months beforehand.

  2. Around retrieval and transfer

Supporting egg retrieval and helping an embryo settle in.

  3. Through the process

Managing stress alongside medical fertility care.

Fertility acupuncture for men, too

Fertility struggles aren't only a female issue, around half involve a male factor, yet men are far less often the ones asking for help. Acupuncture can support sperm count, movement and shape, and improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, all things that respond to lifestyle and treatment changes over roughly a three-month window, the time it actually takes new sperm to develop.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, male fertility is closely linked to what's called Kidney Essence, or Jing, a way of describing your body's deep reserves of vitality. Acupuncture and, where appropriate, herbal medicine work to support that reserve, alongside practical guidance on stress, sleep and heat exposure (tight clothing, laptops on the lap, hot baths) that can all affect sperm quality.

When to start treatment

Sooner is generally better, but there's a specific reason for that beyond simply "the earlier the better". An egg takes around three months to fully mature before it's released, and sperm take a similar amount of time to develop. That's the window where acupuncture, herbal medicine and lifestyle changes have the most time to make a genuine difference, which is why many people start treatment about three months before actively trying to conceive, or before starting an IVF cycle.

That said, starting later, including once you're already partway through fertility treatment, still has real value. Acupuncture can be introduced at any stage, and treatment is simply adjusted to focus on what will help most given the time you actually have.

Good questions

Fertility struggles can feel overwhelming. Here's what tends to reassure people.

Related care

Read Sandra's own fertility story, or explore women's health more broadly.

How long before trying to conceive should we start?

Many people start around 3 months before trying or beginning IVF, but we adapt to whatever timeline you're on, including if you've already started.

Will this interfere with my IVF specialist's plan?

No, we work collaboratively alongside your fertility specialist, timing treatment to support your existing plan, not replace it.

Is it normal to feel emotional talking about this?

Completely. This is a private, unhurried space, and Sandra has supported hundreds of couples through this journey, including her own.

Can my partner be involved too?

Yes, around half of fertility challenges involve male factors, and we welcome partners to be assessed and supported too.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No, you can book directly. A referral is only required for WorkCover, Veterans' Affairs, CTP or a Medicare chronic condition management plan.

Can I claim on my private health fund?

In most cases, yes. The clinic is registered with all major health funds for physiotherapy, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, so most policies allow you to claim on the spot through HICAPS and just pay the gap. Check with your fund to confirm your level of cover.

Are there points you avoid once I've ovulated or had a transfer?

Yes. A small number of acupuncture points are avoided in the second half of your cycle once ovulation has happened, or after an embryo transfer, and treatment is adjusted accordingly. This is standard, careful practice, not a reason for concern. Severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or symptoms of OHSS during treatment need urgent medical attention.
