Fertility: I've been there too.

Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and 20 years of experience supporting fertility, at our Highgate Hill clinic.

Being a clinician doesn't make you immune to fertility struggles. Dr Sandra Tan was diagnosed with PCOS in her 20s, and at 42 fell pregnant naturally after acupuncture, herbs and supplements. That personal experience is why fertility care here is never just clinical.

Common fertility challenges

  • Conditions like endometriosis, PCOS and adenomyosis (a condition where the uterus lining grows into its muscle wall)
  • Hormone imbalances, including thyroid and ovarian reserve
  • Male factor: sperm count, movement and shape
  • Unexplained fertility challenges

How acupuncture helps

Over the past 20 years, Sandra has helped hundreds of Brisbane couples through fertility challenges, including many women going through IVF. Combining IVF with holistic support, acupuncture, herbs and supplements, can increase the chances of success.

Care is planned around where you actually are in your cycle, not treated as one fixed problem. The days around your period call for one focus, the two weeks building toward ovulation call for another, and the two weeks after ovulation (or after an embryo transfer) call for something different again. If needling is part of your care during this second half of your cycle, we're always careful about which points we use, because a handful of points are avoided once ovulation or a transfer has happened. Whatever stage you're at, and however long this road has been, you're not just a set of test results here.

Why men matter too

Fertility is often thought of as a woman's issue, but around 50% of fertility challenges involve men. Supporting both partners gives the best chance of success.

Good questions

Fertility challenges can feel isolating. Here's what people usually want to know first.

Related care

More on the acupuncture side of fertility, and women's health more broadly.

How long before trying to conceive should we start?

Many start around 3 months beforehand, but we work with whatever timeline you're on, including mid-IVF cycle.

Is it normal to feel emotional discussing this?

Completely, and you're speaking with someone who has walked this path personally as well as professionally.

Does this replace IVF?

No, it's designed to work alongside IVF or natural conception, supporting your body through whichever path you're on.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No, you can book directly. A referral is only required for WorkCover, Veterans' Affairs, CTP or a Medicare chronic condition management plan.

Can I claim on my private health fund?

In most cases, yes. The clinic is registered with all major health funds for physiotherapy, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, so most policies allow you to claim on the spot through HICAPS and just pay the gap. Check with your fund to confirm your level of cover.

Is acupuncture safe during a stimulation cycle or after a transfer?

Yes, when it's planned around your specific stage. Certain acupuncture points are avoided once ovulation or an embryo transfer has happened, and treatment is always coordinated with your IVF timeline. Sudden severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding or symptoms of OHSS during a stimulation cycle need urgent medical attention, not acupuncture.
